Suriya’s Jai Bhim clip featured on Oscar’s official youtube channel

A scene from the TJ Gnanavel directorial Jai Bhim has been featured on the official YouTube channel of the Oscars. Starring Suriya, the movie had also made an official entry to the Golden Globes 2022 as a nomination under the category of Best Non-English Language Film. Sharing the news online, the makers of the movie and production company 2D Entertainment called it “an honour of the highest order”.

The particular scene from the film has been featured in the Scene at The Academy segment of the channel that focuses on filmmakers and artists talking about the evolution and breakdown of a scene.

The plot of the movie revolves about a pregnant woman who seeks help from a certain advocate after her husband goes missing in Police custody. The movie gained a lo of controversy around it as it portrayed caste basis preference and treatment by the police. The film is based on true events and revolves around the unfair treatment and discrimination of people from the Irular tribe.

The movie was hailed for its depiction of caste politics, however, it was called out for its wrongful representation of the Vanniyar community, a dominant caste in Tamil Nadu.

Following the movie’s release on the OTT platform, the Vanniyar Sangam had issued a legal notice to the actors of the film as well as the director and to Amazon Prime Video alleging that the film defames the reputation of the community by deliberately showing it in a bad light. The notice also seeked deletion of certain scenes, as well as an unconditional apology along with a fine of Rs five crore for damages.

Fans took to Twitter to praise the movie and Suriya and taking pride in the achievement as the film marks the only Tamil movie to be featured in the Oscar’s YouTube channel. A Twitter user called Suriya the “pride of Indian cinema,” while another wrote, “I was over the moon to hear the news of Jai Bhim being featured in the Oscars YouTube channel.”
